Thoracic disc herniation

A rare condition that may be associated with spinal cord compression.

Thoracic disc herniation is relatively uncommon but clinically important, because the risk of spinal cord compression is higher at this level.

When evaluation is needed

  • Pain in the mid-back
  • Pain wrapping around the chest or abdomen
  • Leg weakness, gait change, or pelvic organ dysfunction

Approach

Diagnosis is based on the clinical picture and MRI. The surgical decision is individual, taking into account neurological risk and the degree of compression.
